Our Actions

Goal 13: Climate Action

The science couldn’t be any clearer. To mitigate the worst effects of climate change on our communities and societies and limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, we must drive significant and sustained emission reductions.

At Hegelmann, we’ve invested in our environmental programme to measure, manage, report, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and waste generated through our operations and supply chain.

As leaders in logistics, it’s our shared responsibility to reduce transportation emissions, use our voice to educate customers, suppliers, partners, and employees about climate change and leverage our assets to provide relief in the case of extreme weather events.

Commitment

01

We will reduce our carbon footprint by 25% by 2030.

02

We will have our carbon targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative by 2025.

03

We will achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across all operations by 2045.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

We are partnered with Emitwise to ensure we accurately measure, manage, and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Every year, we prepare our greenhouse gas inventory in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, with our emissions categorised in the following three scopes:

Scope 1

The emissions we are directly responsible for as they are released from our operations, such as on-site fuel combustion or emissions related to company vehicles.

Scope 2

The emissions we are indirectly responsible for as they are associated with the purchase of electricity, heat or stream from third-party energy providers.

Scope 3

The emissions we are indirectly responsible for as they arise from every activity in our value chain, such as the purchase of goods and services.

Detailed emissions data for scope 1, 2 and 3

Through our partnership with Emitwise, we are leveraging advanced software solutions to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of our emissions data collection and calculation processes.

To further strengthen our emissions assessment, we are actively engaging with our value chain to obtain more granular, supplier-specific data. This collaborative approach allows us to better understand our impact and improve the quality of our reporting.

All emissions are reported in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e), enabling us to identify key areas of opportunity and strategically prioritise initiatives that deliver the greatest emissions reductions.

Calculations by

In 2022, we partnered with Emitwise to gather comprehensive data across our operations and supply chain, enabling us to establish a representative emissions baseline as a foundation for setting meaningful reduction targets.

As we progress on our path to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, we remain committed to improving data accuracy and maintaining transparency through annual emissions disclosures.

Our 2024 greenhouse gas emissions assessment encompasses Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, providing detailed insights into the specific activities contributing to each category.

Our total emissions for 2024 amount to 655,415 tCO2e, with the emissions split across the following scopes:

Scope 1

302,685.56 tCO2e

*167,591.8 tCO2e

Scope 2

1,063.66 tCO2e

*569.74 tCO2e

Scope 3

351,666.22 tCO2e

*119,124.23 tCO2e

*Hegelmann Express GmbH emissions.

Regarding specific activity types, our most material categories, in terms of total emissions, are:

Mobile combustion

301,961 tCO2e

*167,591.80 tCO2e

Fuel and energy-related services

71,900.16 tCO2e

*24,844.32 tCO2e

Purchased goods and services

255,561.53 tCO2e

*81,091.91 tCO2e

*Hegelmann Express GmbH emissions.

As a transportation company, we focus on the most relevant emissions intensity metrics to reflect the environmental impact of the services we provide to our clients. For Hegelmann Division West, we have calculated a tank-to-wheel (TTW) emissions intensity average of 0.87 kg CO₂ per kilometre travelled.

This data enables us to pinpoint emissions hotspots within our operations and supply chain, allowing us to strategically prioritise reduction initiatives where they can deliver the greatest impact.

Our partnership with Emitwise reinforces Hegelmann’s strong commitment to decarbonisation and environmental stewardship. By leveraging Emitwise’s advanced carbon management platform, we gain access to accurate, high-quality emissions data that supports data-driven decision-making and enhances the effectiveness of our emission reduction strategies.

This collaboration highlights our commitment to leading emissions reduction efforts within the transportation sector and by working closely with our suppliers and partners, we are actively advancing the decarbonisation of our industry.
