Goal 13: Climate Action

Bio-Fuels Usage

On the road to Net Zero emissions, Hegelmann is exploring new solutions and technologies to decarbonize the logistics sector. One of these solutions is to increase the amount of Bio-LNG and Bio-CNG powered trucks in our fleet.

What started in 2020 as a pilot test with 5 LNG trucks has now led to over 150 biofuel-powered trucks in our fleet. Refueling stations are already available in our countries of operation, such as France and Germany, and allow us to reduce the emissions intensity of our logistics services.

2,400,000 kg of bio-LNG were used during 2024 instead of an equivalent amount of conventional diesel that saved approximately 6,410.769 tonnes of CO2 emissions, this reflected a great reduction in our emissions through-out the year and will have a greater reduction in the upcoming years.

After the approval of using HVO 100 for public and commercial use, we launched a targeted evaluation of HVO 100 as part of our broader decarbonisation strategy. HVO 100 is a renewable diesel alternative that offers significant lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions while remaining fully compatible with modern diesel engines.

As part of our supplier assessment process, we prioritise HVO 100 options that meet the sustainability and compliance standards set by the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and are certified under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme. These criteria ensure the use of responsibly sourced feedstocks and full traceability across the value chain.

To address varying levels of infrastructure across regions, we have adopted a dual approach:

  • Direct use of HVO 100 in locations with established supply networks.
  • Certified mass-balancing systems to allocate renewable fuel usage across our wider operations.

In addition, we have implemented a book and claim system to ensure accurate and transparent allocation of HVO 100 usage to our customers, supporting verified emission reductions across our value chain.

This strategy enables us to reduce emissions effectively, ensure regulatory compliance, and advance our shift toward a low-carbon, sustainable logistics model.
